Saigon was captured by the French in 1859 and from 1956 until its demise in April 1975, Saigon was the capital of the US-backed Republic of Vietnam. Today, renamed Ho Chi Minh City, the city is very much the heart of Vietnamese business but still retains its connections to the past, particularly in Cholon, Saigon’s Chinatown. Evidence of the French occupation can still be seen in the architecture of many buildings such as the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office.

Even if you have no interest in the war history, the Cu Chi Tunnels complex, 70 km from Ho Chi Minh City, is a must see. The incredible tunnel system, covering nearly 250km is an amazing feat of engineering and provided shelter to over 16,000 communist guerrillas during the American war. Visitors are able to crawl around in the safer parts of the tunnel system and some tunnels have now been made larger to accommodate the larger size of Western visitors. Underground conference rooms, where campaigns such as the Tet Offensive were planned in 1968, have been restored and visitors may enjoy a simple meal of food that Viet Cong fighters would have eaten.

The Cao Dai Temple located near Tay Nihn, 100 km northwest of HCMC is a major centre of pilgrimage for the 2 to 3 million followers of Caodaism. The religion was founded in the south of Vietnam in 1926 by Ngo Van Chieu after receiving instructions from God. Caodaism is basically a mixture of Catholicism, Buddhism and Taoism and from a spiritual point of view, Caodaism believes in harmony with all religions, the existence of the spirit world and our inner souls.

There are many Cao Dai temples around southern Vietnam but the one located near Tay Nihn is the largest and most beautiful of them all and the architecture is a blend of Eastern and Western styles. The result is part cathedral, part pagoda, part mosque, with unusual pastel colours, embellished with gold and polished glass. Worship takes place every six hours beginning at midnight followed by chanting at 0600h and 1800h daily. Visitors are permitted to watch from the galleries and may take photographs but knees must be covered and shoes removed before entering. Silence is requested when a service is taking place.

The Mekong Delta is often referred to as the rice bowl of Vietnam as it produces three harvests per year. The delta area marks the end of the Mekong Rivers 4,500km journey made through six countries to reach the ocean. During your 3 day 2 night stay in your Bungalow, you will get to explore the lush green jungle and enjoy the rich diversity of vegetation in the Mekong Delta. Get up close to every-day life on the Mekong river and experience the hectic pace, exotic aromas and traditional way of doing business at the Cai Be floating market.

Hoi An was a major oriental port for trading ships from Japan, China and the West during the 16th and 17th centuries and became the meeting place for a wide range of merchant traders. As a result, the old town in Hoi An has a diverse mixture of architectural styles and today is considered a living museum of architecture and urban lifestyle. Hoi An is world famous for its’ 300+ tailor shops where you can have virtually any item of clothing made or copied to suit your own personal style in a matter of one or two days.

Built in approximately 200AD to 1700AD, My Son was once the spiritual heart of the Kingdom of Champa peoples who occupied what is now the central area of Vietnam for over a thousand years. My Son is situated in an attractive valley, well away from any other buildings in a clearing surrounded by tropical jungle. The peaceful surroundings give you a feeling of stepping back to the time when then area was a major religious complex and even in their current state, the towers are impressive, and the scale of building makes its religious significance obvious.
